The place name Shirley commonly means “bright clearing” being recorded as a manor with a mill in the Domesday Book and is a broad district and a former village on the West side of Southampton.

Shirley’s main roles are retailing and residential as the most important suburban shopping area on the west of the City with a mixture of council houses in the centre of the district, surrounded by private housing. The larger suburban houses are concentrated in Upper Shirley and separated from Highfield by Southampton Common, 326 acres of green space.

The area today features excellent schooling for all ages, including the private 450 year old King Edward school, and Richard Taunton sixth form college. The excellent Southampton General Hospital and University are nearby as well as a wide range of shops, bars and pubs along the Shirley precinct and High Street.

The mainline train station is located at the bottom end of Shirley taking you to London Waterloo in just over an 1 hour and a quarter.
