As an area, Woolston offers an abundance of maritime and aviation history and was formally incorporated in to the borough of Southampton in 1920. Woolston is believed to have originated from Olafs Tun, a fortified tun on the East bank of the River Itchen established by the Viking leader, Olaf 1 of Norway in the 10th century.

With a major shipbuilding yard situated just a short distance downstream from the Supermarine factory, Woolston attracted much unwanted attention from the Luftwaffe during World War II. This bombing did much damage in Woolston and completely destroyed the Supermarine factory and the neighbouring Itchen Ferry village in September 1940, but it did not stop production of the Spitfire which had been safely dispersed around the country.

In 1900, Vosper Thorneycroft was a major employer for the local area, but relocated in 2004. Since then, this area has undergone intensive redevelopment by Crest Nicholson creating a vibrant residential and commercial area, now known as Centenary Quay. This development has transformed Woolston and has become the heart of modern day living and socialising on the East side of Southampton City Centre.
